Our team of attorneys are now investigating claims and prepared to file Mirena lawsuitsinvolving the intrauterine contraceptive device Mirena®. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena is an IUD device [intrauterine device] that must be inserted by a trained health care provider and is intended to provide contraceptive protection for up to five years. Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of theMirena device, including perforation of or imbedment in the uterus.

Mirena Lawyer: California Woman Sues Over Injuries Resulting from Side Effects, IUD Perforation of Uterus

Twenty-nine California women have come together to initiate a Mirena injury lawsuit claiming that they suffered from uncommon side effects caused by the contraceptive. Filed in the San Francisco Superior Court in the third week of July, the Mirena product liability lawsuit accuses manufacturer Bayer of marketing a defective product for birth control that led to serious injuries. The plaintiffs underwent Mirena IUD surgical removal enduring physical and emotional sufferings caused by the contraceptive device within months of using it.

According to the Mirena lawsuit, all 29 women were implanted with the T-shaped intrauterine device between 2004 and 2012. Most of them were forced to remove the contraceptive device within months following discovery of Mirena IUD migration from the inserted place. The device migrated to the abdomen or other body parts perforating pelvic organs, uterus, and other internal organs. A number of the plaintiffs went for hysterectomy or the uterus removal surgery because of the perforation caused by the IUD. One of the plaintiffs was diagnosed with ovarian cysts. She was also found to be pregnant despite having the Mirena contraceptive implanted for more than two years. The woman also had to undergo hysterectomy.

The Miren lawsuit claims that manufacturer Bayer was aware of the design defect that leads to spontaneous migration of the IUD. However, it never apprised consumers of such serious side effects and continued to market the defective product for commercial gains.

More Than 70,000 Mirena Injury Reports

The FDA had received at least 70,000 Mirena injury reports since the IUD was approved in 2000. There were more than 40,000 Mirena side effect incidents, including about 5,000 mirena migration and 1,700 mirena uterine perforation cases, reported on the MedWatch system in the last five years. The following are the most common Mirena contraceptive side effects reported.

  • Mirena migration causing extensive injury to vital body parts, pelvic organs, and uterus. In one case, the IUD migrated as far as ribs of a woman and got struck there. She had to undergo sternotomy, usually performed on open heart surgery patients, to remove the contraceptive IUD.
  • Hysterectomy is another most serious fall out of Mirena uterus perforation. The IUD has been found to be spontaneously moving away from the place of implant, and in the process, it punctures uterus and uterine walls of users. This causes permanent damage to uterus leaving no other option but surgical removal of the vital organ.
  • Uterus perforation and removal caused by Mirena IUD contraceptive puts users at the risk of no-viable pregnancy.
  • Mirena birth control has also been linked to post-removal problems, such as miscarriage, pregnancy-related medical complications, and early delivery.
  • Ectopic pregnancy or fertilization outside the uterus while the IUD remains inserted is another significant Mirena side effect. Contrary to the manufacturer claim as a safe birth control option for more than three years, Mirena contraceptive, as reported, has failed to prevent ectopic pregnancy.
  • Mirena removal surgery necessitated by the IUD displacement can be fatal for pregnant women.
  • Levonorgestrel hormone released from Mirena IUD causes painful ovarian cysts at least in one of the eight contraceptive users.
  • The birthcontrol has also been reported for causing genitourinary disorders, vaginal problems, including vaginitis, menstrual bleeding and irregularity, angioedema, and pelvic infections.

If you experienced adverse Mirena side effects, required surgery or have a loved one who suffered death following the implantation of Mirena, you may have a potentialMirena lawsuit.
