Our team of attorneys are now investigating claims and prepared to file Mirena lawsuitsinvolving the intrauterine contraceptive device Mirena®. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena is an IUD device [intrauterine device] that must be inserted by a trained health care provider and is intended to provide contraceptive protection for up to five years. Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of theMirena device, including perforation of or imbedment in the uterus.

Mirena Lawyer: Surgical Removal Can Cause Side Effects

A South Carolina woman opted for Mirena IUD following the manufacturer’s claim promoting it as a safe device. However, she had to undergo surgery within a year to get the displaced birth control device removed. Kelli Baugh in her 20’s now has to live with surgically induced menopause and daily estrogen intake following surgical complications. She has filed a civil Mirena injury lawsuit seeking statutory, compensatory, and punitive damages from Mirena birth control manufacturer Bayer Healthcare. Another woman from Ohio ended up with appendectomy and stomach tissue excision following the surgical removal of Mirena IUD attached to her uterus.

Similarly, Jessica Dinicola of Connecticut suffered permanent injury to her placenta accrete and severe pain along with loss of money when she went for Mirena removal surgery necessitated by the IUD migration within her body. A Missouri woman, who was pregnant, underwent a similar high-risk surgery to remove the migrated IUD stuck in her abdomen.

Mirena Removal Surgery: Risk of Injury

Spontaneous Mirena migration is the primary reason behind the need for removal surgery. The T-shaped IUD implanted in the uterus often moves away from its place and floats in the abdomen or embedded to stomach, uterus, and ribs damaging internal organs. An analysis of reports of such incidents shows that lactating women face a higher risk of surgical intervention forced by Mirena perforation.

At least 4,775 women underwent Mirena removal surgery forced by the IUD migration and uterine perforation, according to a report on a Cleveland-based television channel. At least 1,000 of these users suffered from high-risk surgical and post-surgery complications. While many of them required hysterectomy to get rid of their perforated uterus, a number of Mirena users had additional surgeries, such as appendectomy, sternotomy, pelvic surgery, surgery-induced menopause, stomach tissue excision, etc.

The most common Mirena migration injuries reported to the FDA or mentioned in lawsuits include,

  • Abdomen pain caused by IUD movement
  • Uterine wall puncturing
  • Uterus damage
  • Surgery-induced menopause
  • IUD embedment with internal organs
  • Pelvic injury, infection, and inflammation
  • Stomach injury and tissue excision
  • Appendectomy and sternotomy in many cases
  • Secondary surgery for injuries

Studies Highlighting Mirena Removal Surgery Injury Risk

According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, surgical and post-surgical complications following Mirena removal surgery may lead to fatal consequences for pregnant women. The findings of a study published in February 2013 edition highlighted a number of cases where Mirena migration resulted in both pregnancy and internal injuries forcing them to undergo removal surgeries at high risk and life-long complications.

The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons has also cautioned people using Mirean IUD for the potential risk of migration and perforation. The apex body of doctors specializing in laparoscopy, endoscopy, and other surgeries that required minimum invasive intervention warns about the risk of perforation of reproductive organs by Mirena birth control both at the time of implantation and following displacement.

According to a recent report on the popular drug safety website DrugRisk.com, there has been a 17 percent jump in the number of Mirena lawsuits, alleging internal organ perforation in the last one month. The website estimates that at least 6,000 woman had serious internal injuries caused by Mirena migration and perforation.

If you experienced adverse Mirena side effectsrequired surgery or have a loved one who suffered death following the implantation of Mirena, you may have a potentialMirena lawsuit.
