Health Risks, And Potential Injuries, Associated With Taking Effexor

Many people all around the world suffer from depression. Whether it is a chronic condition or a temporary condition brought on by an intense event, there are many ways that doctors attempt to treat the condition. There are many various medications that are out on the market today that are intended to help with the treatment of depression. Some of them are more helpful than others. Some of the depression medications end up having worse side effects and risks to personal injuries than the depression was initially causing. It is important to consult with a physician about the potential risks to your health and personal injury that are associated with the type of depression medication that you are prescribed. You have to understand the risks fully before you consume the potentially risky medication.

Medications that alter one’s state of mind are often a risky investment in and of themselves due to the nature of the medication. No matter how well tested the product is, there is no way to judge how every individual is going to react from the use of the product. There are always variables that affect the stability and results of the product. One of the types of depression medication that can cause serious side effects, or potential injury, is the depression medication known as Effexor. This type of depression medication has been known to cause minor side effects, as well as more serious conditions including convulsions and seizures, itching or skin rash, fainting or fatigue, menstrual changes, challenges with urination, lack of control of emotions, difficulty breathing, abnormal dreams, paranoia, and even illusions of suicide.

These are some serious side effects that can occur during the use of Effexor and can continue after the cessation of the use of this product. Consult with a physician before use of this product and take care when discontinuing use of the product.

Minor Side Effects

Some people only experience minor side effects from the use of Effexor. Some of the minor side effects include changes in vision, such as blurred vision on a regular basis, headaches, high blood pressure, chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat, mood or mental changes, and ringing or buzzing in the ears.  These are all minor side effects and can usually be eliminated by the cessation of the use of this depression medication.

Convulsions Or Seizures

Some people suffer from more serious and complicated side effects or injuries from the use of the depression medication known as Effexor. One of the bigger side effects from using this depression medication is the experience of convulsions or seizures. If you or someone you know is experiencing convulsions or seizures while taking Effexor, then you must contact a physician immediately. It is ill advised to stop taking the medication abruptly. You must wean yourself off of the drug in order to eliminate the risk of further physical and mental complications .

Fainting Or Fatigue

Fainting or general fatigue is a side effect of taking Effexor that will greatly complicate the healing process of working with depression. People who suffer from depression often times have major difficulty with energy and functioning in their every day lives. Therefore, adding the side effect of fainting and fatigue can ultimately complicate their depression even further.

Menstrual Changes

Some women who have taken Effexor have reported changes in their menstrual cycle. Whether it is missing a cycle, or having irregular bleeding during the month, there are implications that can complicate life in general if the menstrual cycle is thrown off balance. If you are woman who is or has taken Effexor and your cycle is changing or effected by the use of this product then you have to get feedback from a medical professional. Remember it is ill advised to remove yourself from the use of Effexor. You must be weaned off of the product safely.

Challenges With Urination

The challenges that patients face in regards to urination in reference to the use of Effexor vary. Some patients have reported an excess of needing to urinate on a more than regular basis, while other people experience with difficulty to urinate at all. This can be painful and challenging to deal with.  Furthermore, irregularity with urination can lead to other more serious complications. If you are experiencing difficulty or challenges with urination you must consult with your physician.

Lack Of Control Of Emotion

There have been reports of patients taking Effexor who have been unable to control the emotions that they are feeling. Why they are not feeling symptoms of being depressed anymore, they might be exhibiting overly excited feelings. This can be paired with an inability to control his or her excitement. This can be emotionally and mentally taxing for someone who is dealing with depression because their actions will not match their inner feelings. If you are finding that you are unable to control your emotions while you are taking Effexor, then you must consult with a physician in order to get the right medication, or dose for your depression needs.

 Abnormal Dreams/ Paranoia

Some patients who are taking Effexor experience abnormal dreams or even feelings of paranoia. This is a challenging side effect because how can you measure the stability of one’s dreams. Furthermore, is it the fact that the Effexor is causing the dreams, or amplifying the individual’s perception of mental activity during REMs sleep? Many people suffer from the abnormal dreams during and after the use of Effexor. Furthermore, paranoia is a common side effect of having used Effexor. This can affect people both during and after the use of the depression medication known as Effexor.

Illusions Of Suicide

Some patients suffer from the ultimate negative side effect and this is the illusion of wanting to commit suicide. There were reports of patients who took Effexor that ended up wanting to commit suicide both during and after the use of the medication. If you or someone you know is or has been on Effexor and is suffering from illusions of suicide, then you must contact a physician immediately.

Effexor Side Effect: Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy Doubles Up Lung Disorder Risk in Newborns

    Effexor Birth Injury

FREE CASE EVALUATION: CALL TOLL FREE AT 1-800-632-1404

Effexor and similar antidepressant drugs double up the risk of lung disorders when used by expectant mothers during pregnancy, a review of seven research findings claims. The latest study made public in January 2014 by the British Medical Journal advises pregnant women taking SSRI and SNRI antidepressants to consider the 2.5-time rise in the risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension in children born because of side effects of these drugs.

Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) in newborns has long been linked to use of Effexor, Zoloft, Paxil, and similar selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors by pregnant women to overcome major depressive and general anxiety disorders. During pregnancy, a baby receives oxygen from the mother through the umbilical cord and blood does not flow to lungs, which take over the function only after the birth. However, often after the birth, the automatic switch does not happen smoothly leading to obstruction of blood flow and respiratory distress in newborns and causing PPHN.

There are reports of babies born to women who used Effexor to overcome depression during pregnancy. According to medical experts and research studies, the drug side effects lead to underdeveloped heart and lungs, hole in septum wall, septal defects, and other birth deformities that cause and aggravate PPHN and similar conditions. This puts babies at the risk of heart failure, tachycardia, hypoxemia, hypertension, circulatory failure, and other long-term health problems. Oxygen deficiency may further damage other vital organs.

    Effexor Birth Injury

Effexor, brand name of venlafaxine, has been linked to serious birth defects in babies born to mothers treated with the medication during pregnancy. The list includes the following deformities as highlighted by research and post-marketing studies.

    • Fatal heart deformities failing to maintain blood flow at required level
    • Septum wall opening that cause circulatory distress and quick tiredness
    • Cranial defects leading to under developed skull and brain
    • Deformities in vertebra
    • Neural tube defects
    • Septal defects causing heart disorder
    • Clubfoot, cleft palates and lip
    • Life-threatening persistent pulmonary hypertension that may result in heart failure
    • Hypoplastic lungs that cause respiratory distress
    • Developmental delays impacting life goals achievement, education, and growth
    • Anus deformities

    Other Effexor Side Effects

Effexor side effects may result in suicidal thoughts in adolescents and children. Pregnant women are likely to have postpartum bleeding following exposure to the medication during their pregnancy, a 2012 Canadian research report claims. Gastrointestinal bleeding, pelvic pain, ejaculation disorders, constipation, withdrawal symptoms, seizure, and hypertension are among other side effects reported by Effexor users.

    Effexor Lawsuits

Over 50 Effexor birth defect lawsuits centralized as per the multidistrict litigation consolidation in the court of Pennsylvania federal Judge Cynthia M. Rufe have sought punitive damages claiming that Pfizer sold the drug that is unsafe to human health, injurious, and improper to be sold. More and more parents are coming forward seeking product liability following increased number of media reports and research studies highlighting Effexor birth defects.

In February 2012, an Ohio mother sued Pfizer with the claim that she gave birth to a daughter with fatal heart defects following use of Effexor during her pregnancy. The child died a few days later. According to another Effexor lawsuit filed by a woman from Illinois, the plaintiff took the antidepressant during pregnancy in the absence of any warning. The side effects resulted in the birth of a baby girl with serious heart defects.

A similar Effexor birth defect filed in a Utah court highlights multiple deformities and malformations in a child born to a mother who was treated with the antidepressant while six-month pregnant.

Effexor Birth Defect Lawsuit: Things to Know

      Effexor Birth Injury

FREE CASE EVALUATION: CALL TOLL FREE AT 1-800-632-1404

The heartbreaking news of birth defects in children born to women treated with Effexor during their pregnancy has led many to question the safety of the antidepressant. Mothers who took the medication to prevent break down of their emotional health, which would have impacted the child in their womb, ended up giving birth to babies with life-threatening birth defects. An Arkansas woman took 150 mg of Effexor during her first pregnancy trimester. She gave birth to a baby girl with “a whole in her heart.” Now almost two years’ old, her daughter had irregular heartbeat and other cardiovascular complications that impacts her quality of life.

A 30-year-old mother from Mississippi took Effexor during pregnancy, and the antidepressant side effects caused her baby to almost die after birth. Her daughter was born like a “zombie,” not crying, and without heart beat for a moment. Now at 7 years, the child continues to remain sick and suffer from low immunity and mood swings.

Effexor Birth Defect Lawsuit: The Drug

Effexor was approved by FDA in 1993. It contains Venlafaxine, a SNRI-class antidepressant. It inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters that control human mood. Doctors widely prescribe the drug to those having obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, depression, and fibromyalgia syndrome. The drug has become one of the most-prescribed antidepressants in the last two decades.

      Effexor Birth Defect Research Studies

Consumers prefer Effexor over other SSRI antidepressants considering that it has fewer side effects. However, researchers are of the opinion that the drug used by pregnant woman may result in birth of infants with a range of deformities and defects. The following are a list of research studies that highlighted potential Effexor birth defects when taken by expectant mothers.

      • Potential six-fold increase in the risk of Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, a fatal lung condition, when Effexor is used by women 20-weeks pregnant.  (New England Journal of Medicine, 2006)
      • Risk of infants born with physical defects when the antidepressant is used by expectant mothers during their third trimester. (British Medical Journal, Aug 2013)
      • Two-fold increase in the risk of heart defects in babies born to mothers due to Effexor side effects during the prenatal stage. (British Medical Journal, 2009)
      • Developmental delays in children because of exposure to Effexor side effects during pregnancy. (Pediatrics journal, Mar 2010)

      Effexor Birth Defects

      • Fatal heart defects and deformities
      • Cranial deformities
      • Underdeveloped brain
      • Anus, vertebra, and neural tube defects
      • Malformations in abdomen, foot, lip, palate, and other body parts
      • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension
      • Hypoplastic lungs
      • Developmental and growth delays
      • Septal and heart valve defects

      Effexor Birth Defect Warnings

      • The American Academy of Pediatrics warned doctors in 2012 against prescribing Effexor to pregnant women citing the risk of birth defects.
      • Health Canada issued an advisory in 2006 cautioning women about birth defects in infants exposed to Effexor following the drug intake by their pregnant mothers.

      Effexor Lawsuits: What Plaintiffs Say

All federal Effexor birth defect lawsuits centralized in a Pennsylvania district court for pretrial consolidation have sought strict liability claiming that the manufacturer failed in its responsibility to inform consumers about the Effexor birth defect side effects.

According to an Effexor birth defect lawsuit filed by a couple, their daughter was born with serious heart defects following use of the antidepressant by the mother while she was six-month pregnant. The child has to undergo a number of surgeries in the last four years, including three immediately after her birth. She now requires further surgeries in the future to treat her heart ailment. The Effexor birth defect lawsuit has also named the doctor, who advised the drug, as a defendant.

The story of another couple from Utah is heartbreaking. Effexor side effects during pregnancy caused the birth of their son with several deformities. The infant died a day after because of heart defects and severe respiratory distress.

Effexor Antidepressant: Birth Defects, Side Effects Outshine Benefits

An Effexor lawsuit filed by a resident of Utah has claimed that the SNRI antidepressant is “defective, dangerous to human health, unfit and unsuitable to be marketed.” Charity Block was happy to become a first-time mother when she gave birth to her son on November 30, 2009. However, she was shocked when the doctor told her about numerous birth deformities in the newborn baby. The boy had life-threatening heart malformations, such as Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, septum wall opening, and ventral septal defect. Other congenital deformities included hypoplastic lungs, intestine and omentum defects, and central diaphragmatic hernia.

Block was prescribed Effexor to overcome anxiety during pregnancy, and the newborn’s birth defects matched the potential side effect risks linked to prenatal exposure to the antidepressant, as warned by various research studies. She has been suing Pfizer for its failure to inform about serious consequences for newborns when Effexor was used by pregnant women.

Sheryllyn Bonds of Georgia has also made similar allegations. According to her Effexor lawsuit, she gave birth to a boy with serious deformities after using the antidepressant prescribed by a doctor during her pregnancy. The child had imperforate anus, which required him to undergo multiple surgeries after birth, and a right club foot.

          Effexor Birth Defects

          • Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension: A life-threatening heart defect, this leads to failure of normal blood circulation. It may lead to hypoxemia, intra-cardiac blood shunting, and heart failure in newborns.
          • Patent Foramen Ovale: Children born to mothers prescribed Effexor during preganancy are likely to have hole in septum wall. The hole remains open allowing blood to flow between the left and right atria instead of the lungs.
          • Fatal heart deformities, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome, ventral and atrial septal defects, hypoplastic lungs, and omphalocele.
          • Cranial defects, such as fetal brain not fully developed or skull not covered.
          • Developmental delays manifested in slow learning, difficulty in walking or sitting early, subdued expressions, slow brain development, and growth problems.
          • Clubfoot, cleft palates and lip
          • Neural tube defects and vertebra deformities
          • Partial or complete blockage of anus

          Other Side Effects

Pregnant women taking Effexor are at the increased risk of postpartum hemorrhage or bleeding. According to a 2010 report in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Effexor side effects put pregnant women at the greater risk of miscarriage. The FDA has warned about the potential risk of suicidal thoughts in those treated with the antidepressant. There are also reports of withdrawal symptoms, ejaculation disorder, somnolence, constipation, abnormal vision, hypertension, gastrointestinal bleeding, seizures, and pelvic pain in a number of people treated with Effexor.

          Effexor Side Effect Warnings

          • In 2004, the FDA ordered the manufacturer to add a black box warning on Effexor for the risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents. In 2005, its prescription for children was prohibited.
          • In 2006, Health Canada urged women already pregnant or trying to conceive to refrain from taking Effexor, as it could cause deformities in children born to them.

Dozens of Effexor birth defect lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer in the United States. Judge Cynthia M. Rufe of Pennsylvania is assigned the responsibility for pretrial consolidation of all Effexor birth defect litigations by the federal MDL panel. All Zoloft birth defect lawsuits filed against Pfizer are also centralized in her court.

Effexor Birth Defect: Research Studies Highlighting Risks

Antidepressant Effexor widely recommended to counter depression and anxiety in women has the potential to cause birth defects in babies born to them. A number of women, who had taken the drug during pregnancy, have come forward claiming that children born to them suffered from birth defects, including heart, septal, cranial, and other physical deformities. There has been a steady growth in the filing of Effexor birth defect lawsuits against Wyeth and its parent company Pfizer, seeking product liability for the antidepressant side effect injuries. Based on research studies and post-marketing reports, it seems evident that Pfizer gave commercial interests primacy over public health and did not disclose Effexor side effect risks for pregnant women.

            Effexor: The First SNRI Antidepressant

Effexor was approved by the FDA in 1993 and marketed by Wyeth, which was acquired by Pfizer in 2009. The first of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors to be introduced in the United States, the antidepressant was among the top 15 prescribed drugs until 2011. Effexor is recommended to treat major depression, social phobia, general anxiety, and panic. Venlafaxine in Effexor-class SNRIs improves serotonin and norepinephrine – the two neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for feelings of well being – inhibits depression and anxiety.

Effexor’s popularity primarily rested on the consideration that SNRIs have lesser side effects compared to SSRIs. However, the recent reports highlighting life-threatening congenital birth defects in children born to mothers treated with the antidepressant show that Effexor is unsafe. The FDA has added a Black Box warning, the highest public health caution, to both SSRIs and SNRIs for inciting suicidal thoughts and behavior in young users.

            Effexor Birth Defect Research Studies

British Medical Journal on Effexor Birth Defect

In August 2013, an Effexor side effect research report published in the British Medical Journal claimed high risk of postpartum hemorrhaging and birth defect associated with SNRI antidepressant. Samples survey of over 106,000 women treated with SNRI and SSRI antidepressants during their pregnancy revealed that those took Effexor face a two-fold increase in the risk of post-delivery bleeding. Babies are most likely to born with physical defects when the drug is taken during or after the third trimester of pregnancy.

The Journal reported a similar study in 2009 that warned of double risk of heart defects, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome and ventral and atrial septal defects, in newborns because of Effexor use by their mother during pregnancy. Most of these deformities require surgical intervention soon after the birth of children.

Effexor Birth Defect and Developmental Delays

In 2010, a group of Danish scholars claimed that mothers taking Effexor during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to babies with delayed developmental stages. Such children may have speech problem, improper brain development, and delayed abilities to sit upright and walk. A March 2010 report in the Pediatrics journal also warned of developmental delays, walking problems, and sitting disorders in children because of antidepressants used by their pregnant mothers.

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued an advisory linking Effexor to potential risk of birth defects in children and miscarriage of pregnant women.

Effexor Linked to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension

In 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine linked Effexor to life-threatening Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, where blood flow to the lungs is obstructed. The published report claimed that the antidepressant could enhance the risk of the fatal lung condition by six fold, if the drug is taken after 20th week of pregnancy. The study prompted Health Canada to issue a public advisory asking women planning pregnancy not to take Effexor and similar SNRI drugs.

Effexor Lawsuit: Antidepressant Birth Defect Side Effect Injuries

Arizona resident Miram took Effexor for two months while she was pregnant after her local ob-gyn prescribed the drug to help her overcome depression. She gave birth to a baby boy a few weeks later. During the postnatal checkup of the new born, Miram was shocked when the doctor told her to admit her three-day-old son to the hospital immediately.

The infant turned blue while under intensive care and doctors performed a cardiac catheterization. Medical diagnosis revealed that the boy was suffering from valvular heart disease, leading to narrowing down of aortic and mitral valves. Next day, the four-day-old infant had a valvuloplasty. However, the agony did not end there. Six months later, the boy had an open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve with the pulmonary valve and implant an artificial valve in place of the latter.

Now after 10 years, she came to know from a doctor that it was Effexor that led to such suffering of her son. The boy underwent second open heart surgery to replace his artificial pulmonary valve last March and it may be repeated in future as the artificial valve does not evolve with age. He may require heart transplant if mitral valve malfunctions. He lives with restrictions and remains prone to fatigue, cold symptoms, and sweating for his entire life. Miram is among the hundreds of mothers weighing the possibility of filing Effexor lawsuits against Pfizer for pregnancy-linked birth injuries caused to their children.

              Effexor Birth Defects

A serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, Effexor when taken by pregnant women can cause their babies born with congenital birth defects, including

              • septal heart defects
              • aortic and mitral valve defects
              • persistent pulmonary hypertension
              • neural-tube malformations
              • abdominal problems
              • cranial defects
              •  cleft problems in lip and palate

              Effexor Side Effect Studies

              • Two research reports published in British Medical Journal between 2009 and 2013 comprehensively highlighted the two-fold potential risk linked to Effexor birth defects. The first based on the medical reports of 500,000 children born to mothers treated with antidepressants concluded that Effexor increased the risk of birth defects by almost two times. It linked low blood circulation and improper heart wall formation to the antidepressant side effects during the prenatal stage.
              • The second study published recently went through the history of 106,000 women who were treated for anxiety disorders when pregnant while between 14 and 50 years. It highlighted high incidence of birth defects and postpartum hemorrhage risk, leading to delivery bleeding among those treated with Effexor.
              • In March 2010, the Pediatrics journal cited that children exposed to Effexor and similar antidepressants at the prenatal stage were more likely to lag behind their developmental stages. Researchers also warned of delay in fetal brain development due to the exposure to antidepressants during pregnancy.
              • According to a 2012 advisory by the American Academy of Pediatrics, doctors should refrain from prescribing Effexor and similar antidepressant medications to pregnant women citing the risk of delivery complications, miscarriage risk, and birth of children with congenital defects.

              Effexor Lawsuit

In August, the MDL panel transferred at least nine reported Effexor lawsuits at the Pennsylvania eastern district court of Judge Cynthia M. Rufe for consolidated proceedings. The judge is entrusted with the duty to oversee all Effexor lawsuits filed in the federal courts representing children born with congenital defects because of their prenatal exposure to the antidepressant.

The plaintiffs include two Utah mothers, who gave birth to children with multiple heart defects and malformations following intake of Effexor antidepressant during pregnancy. Another Effexor lawsuit filed by a Texas woman has claimed that her daughter was born with persistent pulmonary hypertension because of side effects of the antidepressant she took during pregnancy.

                Effexor Birth Defect Lawsuit

Pfizer is facing an increasing number of Effexor lawsuits as many families are coming forward blaming the antidepressant drug for birth defects. Introduced in 1993 by Wyeth, now a Pfizer subsidiary, Effexor has been used to treat anxiety, panic, depression, diabetic neuropathy, migraine, and bipolar disorder. However, recent research has unveiled a close link between Effexor and birth defects in babies born to women treated with the antidepressant drug.

                Effexor Birth Injury Risk Studies

Research findings reported in the British Medical Journal in September 2009 warned of two-time higher risk of septal heart defects in children due to Effexor side effects during pregnancy. The study took into account over 500,000 children born to women, who used Effexor and similar SNRI antidepressant drugs, between 1996 and 2003.

The results reveal that such children exposed to Effexor-class antidepressants face double risk of congenital heart defects caused by incorrect formation of wall separating the heart into two parts. Blood flowing between the two parts reduce efficiency of the heart, leading to low blood circulation. It was found that surgical intervention soon after the birth may be the only resort to save children born with such defects. In 2002, a similar report based on an Australian research finding warned of high toxicity risk caused by venlafaxine, the generic name of Effexor.

In August 2013, a research study published in the British Medical Journal went a step ahead with a more detailed explanation regarding Effexor pregnancy injuries. Researchers looked into the case study of 106,000 mothers who suffered anxiety or mood disorders when they aged between 14 and 50 years. They found that those treated with Effexor had a two-fold risk of bleeding during delivery caused by postpartum hemorrhage. Also, children born to such mothers had a higher risk of congenital defects.

The American Academy of Pediatrics also advised pregnant women in January 2012 against using SNRI antidepressants, including Effexor and similar medications, for the potential risk of pregnancy complications and birth defects.

                Effexor Lawsuits Claiming Birth Defect

In July 2013, one Utah mother sued Pfizer holding its antidepressant medication Effexor responsible for congenital birth defects in her son. According to the Effexor lawsuit filed in a federal court, Charity Block took the antidepressant drug during her pregnancy. The drug side effects led to birth of her son with serious heart malformations, hypoplastic lungs, umbilical hernia, and ventral septal defect. There were no warnings from the manufacturer about the risk of birth defects in babies exposed to Effexor during the prenatal stage. The plaintiff has claimed that Pfizer sold the antidepressant that was “defective, dangerous to human health, unfit and unsuitable to be marketed.”

Block’s litigation is one of the dozens of Effexor lawsuits seeking product liability and damages citing that the manufacturer withheld information about pregnancy risks linked to the antidepressant. The plaintiffs have sought compensatory and punitive damages, citing fraud, suppression of facts, negligence, breach of warranty, and violation of consumer laws. In August 2013, the federal MDL panel selected Judge Cynthia M. Rufe of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for pretrial consolidation of all federal Effexor lawsuits.

As attorneys that are providing free case evaluations to women whose children were born with birth defects following the ingestion of Effexor or Effexor XR during pregnancy, we wanted to advise that the JPML has created a multi-district litigation in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  Judge Cynthia M. Rufe will oversee the MDL proceedings.

The MDL suits that will be pending in Pennsylvania accuse the Pfizer Inc. and White Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of failing to inform the Food and Drug Administration, doctors and patients that Effexor could cause serious birth defects if ingested during pregnancy.  The cases will all involve common questions of fact and transferring the cases to a single judicial district will be convenient for the parties and witnesses and will promote the just and efficient conduct of the litigation.

Among the common questions of fact are whether and to what extent Effexor has caused birth defects, when defendants first learned of the link between the drug and risks/complaints of birth defects, whether Effexor is defective in design and is unreasonably dangerous, whether the drug sold without warnings, and whether the defendants intentionally or negligently concealed Effexor’s risks from the FDA, doctors and consumers.

It should also be noted that the claims regarding Effexor in this litigation will parallel in all likelihood the claims as involving the drug Zoloft in MDL 2342, already pending before Judge Rufe and involving Pfizer as a defendant. The FDA approved Effexor in 1993 for the treatment of major depression in adults.  Plaintiffs allege that Pfizer and White knew or should have known that the ingestion of Effexor during pregnancy poses risks to the developing fetus because the drug crosses a placenta.

If your child was born with a serious birth defect and you took Effexor or Effexor XR during pregnancy, please contact us as soon as possible.

                    Effexor injuries

If you or a loved has suffered Effexor injuries or serious side effects then you are eligible for a defective product liability claim. Effexor (venlafaxine) belongs to a class of drugs called “SSRI’s” (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).  It is used to treat depression as well as different kinds of anxiety disorders. Manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. Effexor was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 which in a way increased its use worldwide. But since then numerous studies came into light pinpointing on the adverse effects of the drug which has led the FDA to issue an alert in 2006 against the usage of this drug. The alert clearly states the high risk of a life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome and also explains the various ways the condition can exacerbate.

Use of anti-depressants like Effexor has shown many adverse effects including suicidal tendencies and severe birth defects in newborns of the mother had been administered Effexor. Increasing instances of such side-effects have in turn led to an increasing number of Effexor injuries lawsuits filed against the manufacturers who allegedly knew about  these risks but did nothing to warn the public about them. In the past two years there have been numerous cases filed against them, the majority on behalf of women who took the drug during their pregnancy and delivered a child with severe birth defects which ranged from skull, heart, abdominal and other defects. A common condition in such infants is a condition called “persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn” which can often turn fatal.

As mentioned above, Effexor injuries lawsuits typically fall under products liability claim. This means that the plaintiff can seek compensation for an injury caused by a consumer product. In case of a pharmaceutical drug causing these injuries the claims can include:

                    • Lack of adequate warnings or instructions by the manufacturer, pharmacy or the doctor
                    • Dangerous side effects caused by the drug
                    • The antidepressant was the cause of your pain and injury

If you have taken Effexor and suffered in any manner mentioned above, then you can expect substantial compensation for your distress. Get in touch with an experienced Effexor injuries attorney who will take in all details of the case and evaluate your potential claim. It could be a case of products liability claim or even a medical malpractice claim depending upon your situation. You can file this case individually or band together with others who have suffered similarly and file a class action lawsuit. Many a times, this can help you get faster results and better compensation but confer with your lawyer because he or she will be the best judge of what would suit you best.

Defective product liability claims can be complicated with numerous medical and legal implications to consider.  The best way to ensure that you get justice and win the case is to hire the services of a lawyer who specializes in products liability, particularly pharma products like Effexor.
