Our team of attorneys are now investigating claims and prepared to file Mirena lawsuits involving the intrauterine contraceptive device Mirena®. Manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mirena is an IUD device [intrauterine device] that must be inserted by a trained health care provider and is intended to provide contraceptive protection for up to five years. Some women have experienced serious adverse side-effects and potentially life-threatening complications following the implantation of the Mirena device, including perforation of or imbedment in the uterus.
Mirena May Cause Peritonitis
Mirea is an intrauterine device, and some women are alleging that the use of Mirena is related to their being diagnosed with both Peritonitis and infertility.
Peritonitis is a serious infection of an important space called the peritoneal cavity. The lowermostportion of this space is often referred to as the pelvic cavity. If peritonitis is not treated aggressively, usually with antibiotics, and possibly by means of surgery, or a combination of both, peritonitis may prove fatal.
In peritonitis, the pain is constant and may be highly localized. A patient with peritonitis usually lies still because any movement of the abdomen is extremely painful. Even coughing and breathing may cause severe pain in the abdomen. When the peritonitis has been present for some hours, the peritoneum on the outside of the intestine becomes inflamed and the normal movements of the intestines cease altogether. This state is known as paralytic ileus. Eventually because nothing is passing through the alimentary canal, the stomach fills up with fluid and this will cause the patient to vomit. Most cases of peritonitis require an operation. Because any person who is suffering from peritonitis will be vomiting continuously, she must be given fluid through intravenous needle.
Immediate Medical Attention
Peritonitis is a medical emergency demanding immediate attention. The pain of peritonitis is usually part of an intense reaction to the perforation of an abdominal organ and the spilling of its contents into the peritoneal cavity (space in the abdomen between the organs). It is frequently so severe and aggravated by any body movement
that the victim cannot even shift position from side to side.
Mirena May Cause Infertility
It is our opinion that women who use the IUD’s like Mirena run a significantly higher risk of developing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease possibly because bacteria enter the uterus during insertion or move up the IUD tail, and then grow rapidly because of IUD-related inflammation or increased bleeding. While fighting severe Pelvic Inflammatory Disease the body lays down scar tissues. These can block the fallopian tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus thereby causing infertility. In especially serious cases of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is necessary. Because of the risk of infertility, the FDA recommends that young women who have not had children should not use the IUD.
