Mirena May Cause Pelvic Inflamatory Disease

Among women, pelvic inflammatory disease is a severe complication of lower genital tract infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia. Each year, pelvic inflammatory disease affects an estimated 1 million U. S. women, of whom perhaps as many as 150,000 become sterile as a result. The use or Mirena device can result in pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is caused by the ascension of bacteria that have colonized the endocervix. Common sexually transmitted organisms include Chlamydia and Gonorrhea; anaerobic organisms include Peptococcus and Bacteroides; and facultative aerobes include E. Coli, Group B Streptococcus, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Haemophilus. The spectrum of upper genital sexually transmitted diseases includes inflammation of the lining of the uterus or pelvis, inflammation of the fallopian tubes, and tubo-ovarian abscesses. Unfortunately, at least one-fourth of those affected experience serious sequelae including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, or chronic pelvic pain.

Risks of Pelvic Mirena-Caused Pelvic Inflamatory Disease

Personal behaviors and sexual practices are two risk factors for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Unfortunately, no historical, physical, or laboratory finding can conclusively diagnose Pelvic Inflammatory Disease; clinical suspicion and empiric therapeutic interventions are required to avoid serious complications.

Symptoms of Mirena-Caused Pelvic Inflamatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an inflammation or infection that travels up the vagina through the uterus to the fallopian tubes. It is often caused by sexually transmitted diseases, particularly gonorrhoea or chlamydia. It can also result from previous surgery, from appendicitis or from an injury to the bowel. It is also associated with the use of intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD) such as Mirena. Acute Pelvic inflammatory disease is a common cause of tubal fertility problems and is relatively easy to treat with antibiotics, but the effects or damage are not so easy to deal with. Women who have Pelvic inflammatory disease may experience more and less severe symptoms depending on the extent of the infection. These can include pain in the abdominal area or pain when urinating, abnormal bleeding or vaginal discharge, a fever or chill. The infection can be treated effectively with antibiotics. If it is not treated it can result in scarring that will further impede fertility. In more severe cases it can block the tubes altogether, or result in the formation of hydrosalpinges.

About Mirena Injuries

The concept of intrauterine device or IUD has been around for many years. However the modern IUD became available in the 1960s when copper wire was added to the device which allowed it to be made much smaller than before.

Mirena is one of the newest IUDs in the market. The Mirena device is a progestin containing intrauterine device that delivers levonorgestrel topically to the endometrium. The effect of the device lasts for at least five years. It can be easily removed. The FDA announced its approval in December 2000 and its sponsor, Berlex Company (the American subsidiary ofSchering,Berlin) began marketing in theUnited Statesin 2001 after successfully launching the contraceptive product inEurope. The intrauterine device is a small plastic device that is inserted in the uterine cavity by a physician. It prevents pregnancy by not allowing a fertilized egg to implant itself in the uterine lining and can remain in place for several years if no difficulties arise. Exactly how this happens is not known, although it is believed that the IUD acts as a foreign body, stimulating an inflammatory reaction in the endometrium. While this reaction creates no discomfort to the user, it creates an environment unfavorable to the implantation of the fertilized ovum. Despite its excellent contraceptive effectiveness rating, the IUD has posed a number of health problems to many users.

Mirena Side Effects

Some women may have progestin side effects after using Mirena. Some women have irregular light spotting for up to three months after the insertion. Another serious side effect that has been associated with the use of Mirena is Abscesses. Abscesses are slow to heal and may cause chronic pain. The most common pelvic abscesses are called TOAs (tubo-ovarian abscesses), but abscesses may occur in other sites as well. Abscesses inflict widespread damage to important tissues; because they tend to recur, they are regarded as chronic conditions. These, too, are treated with antibiotics, but the response is less certain. Like sinus infections, chronic tubal infections are difficult to eradicate. Recurrences need prolonged antibiotic treatment, sometimes surgery for draining abscesses, and often cause such misery that hysterectomy may be considered an acceptable alternative, simultaneously excising the tubes.

An abscess is a cavity filled with pus and lined with inflamed tissues. Abscesses form where there is equilibrium between the invading bacteria and the resisting host. Several days after the infection, an abscess near the surface of the skin will become hot, red, tender swelling. If it is deep inside the body, the abscess cannot be seen or felt and the patient will feel ill and run a high temperature for no apparent reason.

Mirena Side Effects

Some women who have had Mirena implanted experienced serious and even debilitating or life-threatening side-effects. The device may migrate from its original position after being inserted, perforating the uterus or embedding itself in the uterus. In both instances, a doctor must locate and surgically remove the device. Mirena may also migrate outside the uterine cavity and cause adhesions or scarring that can lead to infertility. Depending on the damage caused, affected women may require a complete hysterectomy, and more serious complications could result in death.
