Our team of attorneys are reviewing claims involving people who took Byetta®, Januvia®, Janumet® and/or Victoza® and were subsequently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or thyroid cancer. Byetta, Januvia, Janumet and Victoza are prescription medications which are part of a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics designed to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, in conjunction with diet and exercise.

According to a February 2011 study published in the medical journal Gastroenterology, diabetics who took Byetta or Januvia were six times more likely to report pancreatitis than those treated with other drugs. In addition, diabetics taking Byetta or Januvia were 2.9 times and 2.7 times more likely, respectively, to report pancreatic cancer than those taking other medications.

Chronic pancreatitis may lead to pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, since pancreatic cancer is typically advanced when it is first discovered, it is an especially fatal form of cancer

Potential Health Risks Associated With The Consumption Of Byetta™, Or Januvia™

More and more people are falling victim to being diagnosed with diabetes everyday. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects the body’s ability to produce insulin and consequently the body’s ability to break down sugar. People with this condition will typically experience frequent urination, extreme hunger, and insatiable thirst.  There are three types of diabetes: in type 1 diabetes people suffer from the body not being able to produce insulin, it is very common in a younger age group like teenagers or young adults, and it is very uncommon with under ten percent of the diabetes population being a type 1 diabetes group. Type 2 diabetes is when the body is unable to produce the proper amount of insulin in order for the body to function to the best of its ability, this type of diabetes describes the greatest amount of the diabetes population as around ninety percent of the diabetes population is types 2, and it is traditionally found in overweight or obese people. Finally type three diabetes, is known as gestational diabetes, which affects women during pregnancy, and can be controlled by a proper diet and appropriate amount of exercise. While a lot of cases of diabetes can be controlled by improving one’s diet and implementing an exercise routine, there are prescription drugs that are given to patients in order to help lower the symptoms and risks that are associated with diabetes.

Two of the prescription drugs that are given to patients suffering from diabetes include Byetta™, and Januvia™. While these prescription drugs are offered to patients in an effort to help alleviate the symptoms and risks associated with diabetes, they have their own side effects and health implications that can be dangerous or harmful to the patient. You should not be influenced to take Byetta™ or Januvia™ if you have ever had pancreatitis, stones in your gallbladder or gallstones, if you have a history of alcoholism, or if you have high triglycerides. Each of these conditions can make you more susceptible to experiencing pancreatitis again or in the future.

Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis is a condition in which the body is suffering from an extended period of time in which the pancreas is inflamed. When the pancreas is inflamed for any amount of time it is unstable and unable to perform its normal functions. The normal functions of the pancreas include breaking down carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and acids in the body in order for the digestive track to function to the best of its ability. If the pancreas is inflamed and therefore, unable to perform its traditional functions then you risk putting your body in harms way. If you are experiencing the symptoms of chronic pancreatitis then you should contact a physician immediately.

Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is a condition in which the pancreas has developed cancer. Often times, pancreatic cancer develops unnoticed or undetected until it is already at a relatively aggressive stage. This makes it difficult to remove, and very challenging to treat. In many cases of pancreatic cancer it is diagnosed after the cancer has begun to spread to other parts of the body. This is due to the fact that pancreatic cancer is relatively painless, and causes few side effects. Other side effects of pancreatic cancer are dependent upon the location of the cancer in or around the pancreas. If the cancer is located in the tip or the head of the pancreas then often times patients experience significant weight loss, dark urine, lightened waste, nausea, vomiting, itching, back pain, etc. Pancreatic cancer that is located in the other parts, or body, of the pancreas tend to only cause back or abdominal pain along with weight loss.

Patients who are experiencing any, or any combination, of these symptoms are urged to consult with a physician immediately in regards to the consumption of the type 2 diabetes medications known as Byetta™, and Januvia™.  These medications have been reported to cause such side effects and injuries, and you want to take every measure to make sure that you are protecting yourself and your health. These products are typically taken in conjunction with proper diet and exercise, so stay on the proper diet and exercise to fight diabetes regardless of your status with these medications.
